Two weeks after winning the prestigious Dartmouth College debate tournament, first-year student Eugenia Giampetruzzi and fourth-year student Zahir Shaikh won the University of Texas Debate Tournament, the last major intercollegiate debate tournament of the season prior to the end-of-season national championship competition.

On February 1 through 3, the University of Texas hosted 120 teams from around the United States. That pool included all the teams vying to win the national championship. On their way to winning the University of Texas tournament, Giampetruzzi and Shaikh defeated outstanding teams from Dartmouth, Georgetown, Harvard, Wake Forest, and UC Berkeley.
