Dear colleagues,
I hope that this message finds you well as we continue to navigate this Georgia heat. I am writing to share some exciting news regarding the search for the director of the 1915 scholars program.
The director of the 1915 scholars program is tasked with providing visionary leadership and support for first-generation undergraduate students across their four-year journey at Emory. The development of this role is integral as we embark on prioritizing the importance of student flourishing within Campus Life and the university as a whole.
After a competitive national search, I am very pleased to announce that Dr. Michelle Johnson will serve as the inaugural director of the 1915 scholars program starting July 18, 2022.
Most recently, Johnson served as the director of academic advising at Georgia College. She brings with her over 10 years of experience working with and supporting first-generation students. Dr. Johnson served as the inaugural director of academic advisement at Ramapo College of New Jersey and oversaw the New Jersey Equal Opportunity Fund program, which focuses on providing funding, access and support for financially disadvantaged students to attend college.
“I am honored to have this opportunity to collaborate with the talented team of professionals in Campus Life who are dedicated to student success and academic achievement at Emory University,” said Johnson, who holds a bachelor of science in psychology from Houghton College, a master of science in student personnel administration from Buffalo State College, and a doctorate in education from Teachers College, Columbia University. Johnson has also received a certificate in management development from the Institutes of Higher Education at Harvard University.
The director of the 1915 scholars program will report to the newly created position of associate vice president and dean of students (working title), which was announced in April as associate vice president for belonging, engagement, and community. During our search for this position, Johnson will report to Kyle Williams, special advisor to the senior vice president and dean of Campus Life.
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Michelle Johnson to our Campus Life team!
Kyle R. Williams, Ed.D.
Special Advisor to Sr. Vice President and Dean of Campus Life
