Bridget Guernsey Riordan to retire next month
After more than 30 years of service to Emory Campus Life and the university community, Bridget Guernsey Riordan is moving on. She joined Emory as director of student activities in 1992 and has served as assistant vice president for Campus Life’s Parent and Family Programs since 2014. Bridget retires on Feb. 7, 2023. Her farewell celebration is scheduled for Feb. 1.

Senior AD Joyce Jaleel honored for 35 years of service
Joyce Jaleel was recognized in December at the Campus Life CLASS Awards and holiday party with the Helen W. Jenkins Lifetime Achievement Award. The honor is presented to an individual who has demonstrated a lifetime commitment to high performance as an Emory Campus Life employee.

Diane Foley selected for Aspiring Leaders Program
Diane Foley, senior business manager in Campus Life Finance Services, has been selected to participate in the 2023 Aspiring Leaders Program. This Emory Human Resources program is for university employees who have been identified as high potential and may soon transition into people- manager roles. Participants develop and enhance their skills in a cohort group of up to 25 colleagues from departments across the university.

EmoryCard to host NACCU Conference on Atlanta campus
The National Association of Campus Card Users (NACCU) will visit Emory’s Atlanta campus on Feb. 1. EmoryCard is hosting a one-day conference,
NACCU Near You, which “provides local and affordable educational opportunities to facilitate networking, idea sharing, and professional development for campus identification and transaction system professionals.” The event is recommended for Emory departments that provide card-related services, although all interested members of the university community may register. EmoryCard has been actively engaged with NACCU since joining the association in 1995. EmoryCard director Kim Pfeffer has chaired the association’s Professional Development Committee and is currently a member of the Board of Directors.

Well before the pandemic, social media connected and blurred professional and personal boundaries for student affairs professionals. Both digital natives and later adopters likely have social media presences that, at least to some degree, blur personal and professional networks.

LiveSafe is a personal safety mobile app that Emory University provides to all students, faculty, and staff to download for free. LiveSafe serves as a preventive measure to stop crimes and incidents before they happen by leveraging the community’s eyes and ears in helping to keep the campus safe. The app provides a quick, convenient, and discreet way to communicate directly with Emory University safety officials. Use LiveSafe to access important safety information such as procedures for a range of emergencies, including inclement weather.

Study finds Medicaid expansion improves cancer survival outcomes for young adults
A large first-of-its-kind study reported in the Journal of Clinical Oncology finds that expanded Medicaid coverage under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) leads to better survival outcomes for young adults aged 18-39 newly diagnosed with cancer, particularly those identified as of Hispanic ethnicity or non-Hispanic Black race.
