Emory debaters defeat nationally top-ranked teams to win tournament

This past weekend, junior Eu Giampetruzzi and sophomore Grace Kessler competed in the Herbert L. James Debates at Dartmouth College. This round robin tournament is comprised of the seven top-ranked teams in the country. Eu and Grace competed against partnerships from Dartmouth, George Mason, Harvard, Northwestern, University of Michigan, and University of Southern California. The Barkley Forum debaters defeated all opponents, winning with a 6-0 record. This is Eu’s second time winning this prestigious tournament. CAPS services spring update

  • Spring semester hours are posted for Let’s Talk, an informal, free, confidential, consultation service offered to graduate and professional students in the Business School, Laney Graduate School, School of Law, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, Rollins School of Public Health, and Candler School of Theology.
  • Emory Helpline (HL) will reopen Feb. 1. This confidential, peer-support telephone hotline provides support for students with non-urgent mental health needs. Access HL by calling 404.727.4357 (HELP). It is open from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m., 7 days per week, during the academic year. HL will close for spring break. Social media: @emory_helpline. (Note: HL Hours have been corrected.)
 

Brittain Award nominations open

The Marion Luther Brittain Award 2021-2022 nomination process is open. The award, the highest given to Emory students, honors meritorious service to the university community. Each year, two students are recognized, one graduate and one undergraduate. All fall 2021 and spring 2022 graduates are eligible for this year’s honor. Learn more and nominate a student here.

 

Join Woodruff Health Sciences Center Library in honoring Black History Month in February with this thought-provoking, free online event. Kylie Smith, an associate professor who teaches the history of medicine in the School of Nursing and the Department of History, will discuss the treatment of Black patients in mental hospitals and its impact on the civil rights movement. ACE's dotEDU Podcast announces new season

Each episode of dotEDU presents a deep dive into a major public policy issue impacting college campuses and students across the country. Hosts from the American Council on Education, joined by guest experts, lead thought-provoking conversations on topics such as campus free speech, diversity in admissions, college costs and affordability, and more. Recent podcast topics include critical race theory and higher education policy. Learn more.

 

Dave Furhman announces retirement

Campus Life’s Senior Director of Finance, Administration, and Operations has announced plans to retire at the end of May. Following several decades in campus dining, university communications, and corporate public relations, Dave came to Emory in January 2013 as Director of Campus Dining and assumed his present position in May 2017. Emory Athletics welcomes Corbin Bryant as Director of Events and Marketing

Corbin joins Emory after working with LakePoint Sports as Assistant Director for Partnerships and Marketing since 2019. In that position, he was responsible for managing the organization’s marketing and promotional efforts and partnership activation, as well as cultivating the fan experience on campus. Read more.
