EUSHS hires new senior operations manager
Carlos Flores has joined Campus Life as senior operations manager for Emory University Student Health Services (EUSHS). His responsibilities include planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating day-to-day building and office operations. Flores, who reports to EUSHS executive director Sharon Rabinovitz, served previously as clinic director with Consultorio Medico Hispano. He holds a MPH in health administration and an MBA. Flores enjoys spending time with his family and attending Atlanta United games. Please join your colleagues to welcome Carlos to the Emory community and the Campus Life team.

Supporting Emory students with Turkey or Syrian affiliations
Following the earthquake in Turkey and Syria last week, the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) sent a care email to students identified as having connections with those nations. Campus Life followed up on Monday with a second care email with information on student support services. On Feb. 15, the Office of Spiritual and Religious Life hosted a community gathering to share prayers, remarks, community, and resources. The following may assist you respond to students' inquiries.

They should contact Student Case Management and Intervention Services. SCMIS provides support for basic needs, follow-up care, and other resources. (If you are concerned about a student in non-urgent circumstances, please submit a Student of Concern
form and SCMIS will follow up with the student. For urgent concerns, please reach out to Student Intervention Services (SIS) 24/7 by calling 404-430-1120.

The Center for Women at Emory has announced the honorees for the 2023 Women of Excellence Awards.
Join CWE and guests for a celebration in person or online. Reception begins at 6 p.m. and the program at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 2.

McMullan Award nominations due March 2
Emory College is soliciting nominations for the
Lucius Lamar McMullan Award. The McMullan Award is meant to honor a graduating senior of uncommon stature in the eyes of the Emory community.
Nominations should be submitted via the

Emory staff and graduate students are invited
to apply to serve as ECS 101 facilitators for fall 2023. This one-credit course, which meets weekly throughout the semester, is designed to help first-year students to transition to Emory. Please see

Ridgway wraps up master's in public health
John Ridgway, assistant director for fitness and wellness in Emory Athletics and Recreation, received his MPH in applied epidemiology in December from Emory’s Rollins School of Public Health. His thesis,
Service Era Risk Factors for Non-Medical Opioid Use Among United States Military Veterans 2017-2019, examined the difference in risk factors for opioid misuse among veterans who served pre- and post-9/11. Ridgway joined Campus Life in July 2015.

The many lives of Andrew Young: A conversation with Andrew Young and Ernie Suggs
Don’t miss the chance to hear Ambassador Andrew Young and AJC reporter Ernie Suggs talk about their recent book, “The Many Lives of Andrew Young.” Young will share stories from his time at the forefront of the civil rights movement and his days as U.N. ambassador and Atlanta mayor. Books will be sold at the event, with a book signing to follow. Part of Emory Libraries’ Black History Month events. Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m. in the Emory Student Center. Free and open to the public.

Did the COVID-19 pandemic change perspectives on inequality?
Goizueta professor Andrea Dittmann found a silver lining related to the pandemic: Firsthand experience of personal harm due to an external force beyond an individual’s control was associated with an increase in their advocacy for equality over time.
