Social Justice Workshop with Deepa Iyer, March 16
Join social justice advocate and author, Deepa Iyer, on March 16 from 12-1:30pm for a workshop to map our roles to bring about justice, equity, and solidarity. Using the social change ecosystem map, Deepa will lead participants through reflections and discussions that will deepen our understanding and strengthen our commitments to social change. Thursday, March 16, from 12 to 1:30 p.m.

Campus Life Finance Service Center announces staff realignment
Lina Vargas, Campus Life's chief business officer, announced several staff changes. “As part of Campus Life’s commitment to advance staff flourishing and our delivery of services to Emory students, we are repositioning key members of the Finance Service Center team to expand knowledge and support in Executive Leadership Team (ELT) portfolios.
This realignment better positions us to continue delivering exceptional student services, further implement Campus Life's
strategic priorities, and enhance services, growth, and development for our outstanding Campus Life team."

Penny leads Finance Service Center
Cheytoria Penny, formerly associate director, now serves as director of Campus Life Finance. In this role, Penny reports directly to Vargas and leads the center’s team of 10, who oversee Campus Life budgets, financial operations, and student governance services (SGS). Penny joined Campus Life in spring 2018. Since then, she has made major contributions, including guiding the finance team through major changes in Emory’s budget process and leading implementation of the Campus Life Budget and Human Resources Request Form. Currently, she is working on scaling the financial reporting infrastructure to serve budget owners at all levels of Campus Life. Penny holds a bachelor's degree and an MBA.

Foley supports finance operations for Athletics and Recreation
As part of Penny’s leadership team, Diane Foley, formerly senior business manager, now serves as senior associate director, supporting financial operations for Athletics and Recreation. After joining Emory in 1989 in the School of Public Health, Foley served with Emory University Hospital before coming to Campus Life in 2002
. A key resource to the organization, Foley helped create cohesive narratives about the history of Campus Life budgets and resource allocations, how to create financial infrastructure that allows budget managers to more effectively manage different sources of funding, and how to better position Campus Life for robust budget tracking and reporting.

Magby works more closely with health and well-being team
Asti Magby, formerly director of student health business operations and finance, now serves as director of operations and finance for health and well-being. She reports to Penny and James D. Raper, Campus Life’s associate vice president for health, well-being, access, and prevention. Magby supports operations and financial priorities for Raper’s portfolio. Among her many contributions since joining Emory in 2007, Magby has
coordinated the credentialing process for Student Health Services' clinical providers,
been designated as operational project lead for launching the use of COVID-19 testing tents and the Student Health Acute Respiratory Clinic to safely accommodate student COVID-19 testing and treatment at SHS, and led
operations for Emory’s Student Health Insurance Plan during 2022. Magby holds dual MBAs in healthcare and human resources.

Recent Emory College graduate selected for prestigious Luce Scholars program
A recent Emory College graduate who is working to address global health disparities has been selected as one of 18 Luce Scholars for 2023–2024. The nationally competitive fellowship provides Layan Ibrahim 21C an opportunity for a year of immersive work experience in Asia.
She will use the award to expand her research into neuropsychiatric disorders and the role that religious cultures play in diagnosis and treatment. Ibrahim majored in neuroscience and behavioral biology (NBB) while at Emory and is the university’s 14th Luce recipient.

Genomic study reveals signs of TB adaptation in ancient Andeans
A new genomic study led by Emory anthropologists, including graduate student and first author Sophie Joseph, finds that Indigenous populations in present-day Ecuador adapted to the tuberculosis bacterium around the time that agriculture began proliferating in the region and thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans.
