Reminder: Emory Votes Initiative needs volunteers

Emory is partnering with DeKalb County Voter Registration and Elections to serve as a polling site at the university’s 1599 Clifton Road building during the primary and midterm elections. The Emory Votes Initiative (EVI) needs volunteers. Sign-up here to support our polling site during the upcoming elections. Read Emory News Center story about the Emory precinct.

 

Class Day Crossover Reception for Emory community

Class Day Crossover is back for its 20th year. Join the pre-reception with alumni, faculty, staff, and other university community members before they gather to cheer on the Class of 2022 during the Crossover procession. Afterward, welcome the graduating class into alumni-hood with a Coke Toast on McDonough Field. Help us show the Class of 2022 a warm welcome to the Emory Alumni Association. Included: free beer, wine, appetizers, fun, and lots of Emory nostalgia. Thursday, May 5, 7- 8:30 p.m. Emory Student Center Plaza. Alumni, staff, faculty, trustees, and other community members register here.

 

Reimagined Emory Class Day Crossover celebration features astronaut Scott Kelly as speaker

Former NASA astronaut and retired U.S. Navy Capt. Scott Kelly has been named keynote speaker for Emory University’s Class Day Crossover, an event for students receiving bachelor’s degrees at this year’s Commencement.

Professional development: Sharpen your public speaking skills with Toastmasters@Emory 

“Toastmasters has boosted my confidence by helping me understand that even the best speakers get nervous before they deliver a speech,” said Adrienne Little-Dunson, administrative assistant to the Office of Student Case Management and Intervention Services and the Office of Respect -- and a Toastmasters member for the past two years. “I am excited about my journey – and, in my opinion, this is the best club you can join.” Interested staff should discuss possible Campus Life funding with their direct supervisor. Office for RACE introduces new staff

  • Victoria Alarcon (they/them) joined Campus Life's Office for Racial and Cultural Engagement in March as a program coordinator. They oversee Centro Latinx, the Centro Latinx interns, the MORE Mentorship Program, and general programming for the Office. Victoria is an alum of Emory University with a bachelor’s in women’s, gender, and sexuality studies.

  • Blair Banks (she/her) joined RACE as a program coordinator in April. She helps to coordinate the MORE Program, as well as manage and supervise the Emory Black Student Union (EBSU) and its staff. Blair received her bachelor’s in race and ethnicity studies from Salem College in Winston-Salem. She will receive her master’s in Africana studies from Georgia State in May 2022.

Oxford College names 2022 Tarbutton Leadership Fellows

Established through a gift by Hugh Tarbutton in memory of his father, Hugh Tarbutton Sr. 52Ox 55B, the program allows students to design a meaningful summer experience around their developing areas of interest. This activity takes place between their first and second years at Oxford.

28% of women in academia say gender limits their advancement

About three in 10 female U.S. faculty and staff members, 28%, compared with 11% of their male counterparts, report feeling they were passed over for a promotion or opportunity at work because of their gender. This is approximately double the national average of 15% among working women in general that Gallup reported the last time it asked this question in 2013.

Work Through COVID-19

COVID-19: Who needs a second booster?

On March 29, the CDC updated its guidance to recommend additional COVID-19 booster shots for some individuals. Emory epidemiologists Dr. Jodie Guest and Dr. Carlos del Rio teamed up to discuss who is now eligible for a second booster, potential risks and benefits of a fourth dose, and whether to mix and match booster shots.
