Join the Orientation team on Monday, August 22, from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. to celebrate a new Emory tradition. Welcome the entire Class of 2026 as they walk through the iconic Haygood-Hopkins gate to mark the beginning of their Emory journey. Staff, faculty, students, and alumni are invited to line the walkway between the gate and quad to cheer and create a welcome to remember. You are invited to stay for the Coke Toast with President Fenves on the Quad immediately following the procession.

Amy Bryant announces retirement following legendary career
Emory University women's tennis coach Amy Bryant has announced her retirement following an illustrious career with the Eagles that spanned nearly three decades. Bryant, who guided the team to seven national championships and 18 University Athletic Association championships during her legendary coaching tenure and was the first woman in NCAA history to win the national team championship as both a coach and player, will officially retire on August 31, 2022.

Office of Respect staffing update
Shana M. Ware, director of the Office of Respect, departed her position with Emory on July 28 to accept a job in Chicago, where she can be closer to family. Shana came to Campus Life with a decade of experience at public and private institutions in advocacy, case management, clinical mental health counseling, and institutional leadership. Before joining Emory, she served as advocacy services coordinator at Northern Illinois University. Campus Life is thankful for her service to Emory students and the university community.

Emory joins amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court
In the filing, Emory and the other universities explain how a diverse student body strengthens the educational experience for all students. The universities write: “Diversity fosters a more robust spirit of free inquiry and encourages dialogue that sparks new insights. Diversity encourages students to question their own assumptions, to test received truths, and to appreciate the complexity of the modern world.”

In January 2020, after more than a year of locally tailoring and testing, an intervention to improve detection and care of diabetes and hypertension in rural communities, Dr. Shivani Patel and her team with the Emory Global Diabetes Research Center launched the initiative out of the Nawanshahr district hospital in India.

New executive director of student centers
Joining Campus Life as the inaugural executive director of student centers, Lydia Washington will officially begin work on October 17. In her new role, Lydia will provide integrated leadership to operations, programs, and services in Campus Life’s three student center facilities – Cox Hall, the Emory Student Center, and the Alumni Memorial University Center (AMUC). The position will also provide leadership for the offices of Student Center Operations and Events (SCOE); Student Involvement, Leadership, and Transitions (SILT); and Community and Civic Engagement (CCE).

Clio Hancock Named UAA Representative for NCAA Woman of the Year Award
Former Emory University swimming standout Clio Hancock has been selected as the University Athletic Association's representative for the 2022 NCAA Woman of the Year Award.
Rooted in Title IX, award was established in 1991 to recognize graduating female student-athletes who have completed their eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service, and leadership throughout their collegiate careers.
