Emory community members victimized by scam emails
Several Emory people have fallen victim and lost hundreds of dollars responding to the increasing number of scam emails purportedly from colleagues in university leadership positions. Typically, the scam email requests your cell phone number. Then it asks you to wire money or buy gift cards or other items. Be aware that the scammer's email address is usually a non-Emory address and includes "[EXTERNAL]" in the subject line.
Any request to wire money or purchase gift cards or other items is almost certainly a scam. If a request looks suspicious, do not reply; reach out by phone or in person to the Emory employee supposedly making the request.
Forward the scam e-mail, preferably as an attachment, to
abuse@emory.edu.
