Gay Pride Parade.  “A large contingent from Emory joined in the Atlanta Pride Parade on Sunday, Oct. 14, taking to the streets of Midtown Atlanta to celebrate the fight for LGBTQ equality. Emory has long been a leader for LGBTQ rights in the South. Founded in 1991, Emory’s Office of LGBT Life is the 10th oldest such campus office in the nation and works to engage the university community in the creation of an affirming and just campus environment while supporting the development of students of all gender and sexual identities.” View photos: http://news.emory.edu/stories/2018/10/er_mm_photos_pride/index.html?utm_source=ebulletin&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Emory_Report_EB_181018

Commission on Racial and Social Justice. The CRSJ Steering Committee, co-chaired by Greg Ellison of Candler School of Theology and Dona Yarbrough of Campus Life, met in October. Of 15 demand working groups – the 13 original demands were distributed among 15 groups – eight have resolved their demands. Mekeshua North presented updates on demands 7 (recruitment, compensation, and quality of work life), 8 (job security), and 12b (treatment of staff). The steering committee recommended that a request to resolve all 3 demands be submitted to the executive committee for approval.

Demands are resolved when: the work fulfilling the demand/initiative has been institutionalized sufficiently to continue as part of the normal operations of the university; the work has been incorporated into another working group; and/or the demand/initiative has been explored and determined to be unfeasible or unnecessary. The CRSJ Executive Committee has requested a report on the commission’s progress over the past two and one-half years, which will form the basis of an executive committee discussion of next steps for CRSJ.
