Mark your calendar for Emory's King Week, a series of events from Jan. 13 to 24 honoring the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement. Programs include a keynote address, educational lectures, spiritual services, community service projects, celebrations and exhibits.

EVI’s Gebresilassie takes on new Campus Life role
The first permanent program coordinator for the then-new Emory Votes Initiative (
EVI), Hannah Joy Gebresilassie (
above left), has accepted the position of associate director of
Emory First. During Gebresilassie’s two years as EVI lead, the organization hosted campus-wide voting events and partnered with Emory’s Office of Government and Community Affairs (
OGCA) and DeKalb County to support the first polling site on campus. EVI also served thousands of voters in the Emory community during midterm, municipal, special and runoff elections, hosted group visits to the state capitol, and collaborated with Oxford College on voting initiatives. Emory First serves as a central hub for first-generation students and students from low- and limited-income backgrounds throughout their educational journey. During the search for new EVI leadership, James Roland, senior director of Campus Life’s Center for Community and Civic Engagement (

Aguilera Dickens to lead Parent and Family Programs
Corina Aguilera Dickens, MEd (she/her/hers), has joined Emory as Campus Life’s assistant director of the Office of
Parent and Family Programs. The office ensures that parents and families of Emory students stay connected with news, events, and other resources available to them as members of the Emory community. In her new role, Aguilera Dickens will develop programming, communications, and engagement initiatives for supporters of Emory students. She reports to Danielle Mitchell-Damron, director of special projects in the office of the associate vice president and dean of students. Aguilera Dickens comes to Emory from Georgia State University, where she served as coordinator for Family Engagement. She holds a master’s degree in education from the University of Florida and a bachelor’s in English writing and rhetoric from the University of Central Florida. Her favorite hobbies include rewatching early 2000s romantic comedies, cheering on Atlanta and Orlando sports teams, and exploring the city with her husband Josh. High-level business justification needed on Emory purchases
To streamline financial processes and enhance transparency, Campus Life’s
Finance Service Center is reminding users to include a high-level business justification or purpose for each transaction when submitting invoices, requisitions, purchase orders, payment requests, and expense reports. Clearly articulated in the comment section or description, this information provides comprehensive details about the purpose of the purchase and facilitates reviews and approvals. If the expense is audited, the business justification with all the necessary information should eliminate the need to contact the department or individual initiating the request. Call for volunteers to interview 2024-25 RA/SA candidates
The Office of Residence Life is preparing to select resident advisor and sophomore advisor (RA/SA) student staff for the next academic year. The office invites Campus Life colleagues to volunteer with conducting candidate interviews. Campus Life team members bring insights that help ensure that the candidates selected will support a positive living environment for Emory’s residential students.
RA/SA candidate interviews will be conducted on Saturday, February 3, in the Emory Student Center, Multipurpose Room 4. Volunteers are needed for two-hour time slots between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. Interested team members should
complete the
SA & RA Interview Availability form by Tuesday, Jan. 16

ACPA, NASPA invite members to help update student affairs professional competencies
ACPA (College Student Educators International) and NASPA (Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education) are partnering again to update the ACPA/NASPA Professional Competencies for Student Affairs Educators. This will include the complementary rubrics, with a planned release for the updates in spring 2025. Emory Alumni Board Leadership Scholarship open for applications
The Emory Alumni Board Leadership Scholarship recognizes outstanding students who have improved the Emory community in the arts or sciences, academic, pre-professional or extracurricular pursuits through mentorship, social outreach, or other areas. Scholarships are awarded for one academic year to one or more undergraduate students who have completed at least two semesters at Emory or Oxford and one or more graduate students who have completed at least one semester at Emory. Only full-time students are considered. The selection of scholarship recipients is based on student merit, with financial aid strongly considered. The deadline

Nominate a colleague for Emory’s Award of Distinction: Campus Life internal deadline is Feb. 2
Consider nominating a Campus Life colleague for the university’s Award of Distinction, the highest award presented to university staff. The Campus Life team consistently demonstrates excellence in serving Emory students and the university community – and many staff members would make strong candidates for the prestigious Award of Distinction. The honor is bestowed annually on 10 to 15 university employees who have made outstanding contributions to the Emory community. Honorees are recognized at a special dinner and receive a $1,000 gift.
All nominations must be submitted directly to Venus Miller (
clde@emory.edu) in Campus Life HR by Friday, Feb. 2
.
Note this date is earlier than the university Human Relations deadline.
Campus Life’s internal review team will review all nominations and decide which will be sent to university HR and the Awards Selection Committee.

Today's College Student: A Dialogue with Kyle R. Williams
In the aftermath of COVID-19, numerous discussions have emerged on the shifting demographics of students. The crucial inquiry is whether these transformations are a recent development or whether COVID-19 has merely heightened our awareness of them. This dialogue examines the evolving demographics of college students, urging professionals to contemplate how our policies and practices either support or hinder our students. Through
such dialogue, educators can collectively contribute to the creation of an environment that is more conducive to successful matriculation for all students.
The discussion will be led by
Kyle R. Williams, EdD. As special advisor to the associate vice president for Belonging, Engagement, Community, and Dean of Students, Kyle brings unique insights into the challenges and opportunities facing college students today.

Rapt By Others: Campus Life Book Salon
Join the third edition of Rapt By Others,
a book club that explores cultural differences by reading and discussing memoirs that engage a range of human experiences. Meeting monthly at the Emory Bookstore, participants discuss one book at each session to deepen their appreciation of the myriad ways in which human lives unfold. Books are free for participants. Wine, coffee, tea, cheese, and fruit are provided.

Emory debaters close out 2023 with prestigious tournament win
In November,
Barkley Forum sent 15 partnerships to the
Franklin R. Shirley Classic at Wake Forest University, one of the premier tournaments in college debate. Four partnerships made it to the elimination rounds. One pair, seniors Grace Kessler and Shreyas Rajagopal, won the tournament, the first time Emory has done so since
1998.
The nation’s largest fall semester competition, the Franklin R. Shirley Classic, attracted 129 debate partnerships. Created in 1956, the event has been voted the “Tournament of the Decade” every decade since the 1970s by national polls of coaches. Pictured are the Emory debaters who competed in the tournament. Friday Night Basketball begins Jan. 19: Emory vs. Case Western
All Eagles are needed in attendance as Emory's nationally ranked men's basketball team takes on nationally ranked Case Western Reserve University. The event features a food truck, beer garden, and tailgate games, which begin at 4:30 p.m. Women's basketball game begins at 5:30 and men's at 7:30.

Healthy Emory organized the first “Stress Less, Live More!” raffle, allowing employees to reflect on the ways they relieve stress. Departments across Emory University and Emory Healthcare also created unique public displays that showcased ways they reduced stress.
