Oddman to embrace a new opportunity
After nearly a decade serving the Emory community, Courtnay Oddman will be leaving the university for a new senior consulting position. In her most recent role, Oddman led Open Expression Programs. She expanded the Open Expression Observers Program, enhanced campus-wide training on the Respect for Open Expression Policy, and managed a record number of requests for open expression support.

About the transition
Lisa Loveall has agreed to serve as interim director of Open Expression Programs during this transition. Under the supervision of Lydia Washington, Carson Banks will serve as interim director of Student Involvement, Leadership and Transitions (SILT), managing the department's day-to-day operations.

Jess Heckler joins SILT team
Student Involvement, Leadership, and Transitions (SILT) has hired Jess Heckler (she/her/hers) as program coordinator for pre-orientation and transition programs. She reports to Carson Banks, associate director of orientation and transitions. Heckler develops and coordinates pre-orientation programs and supervises and supports student staff. Her previous positions include assistant director of new student connections at Georgia Gwinnett College and new student orientation coordinator at Pennsylvania State University. Heckler holds a master’s in higher education, bachelor’s in secondary education and bachelor’s in mathematics from Pennsylvania State. She likes exploring Atlanta and welcomes recommendations on places to visit in the metro area. Heckler also enjoys visiting family in Pennsylvania, reading, and spending time outside with her dog Charli. You can welcome Jess to Campus Life at

Campus Life HR team welcomes Jamie Thomas
The new manager of human resources for Campus Life is Jamie Thomas, reporting to Mekeshua North, HR director. Thomas oversees the HR team, leads their daily tasks and manages student hiring. She assists with staff recruitment and actively engages in planning and executing departmental activities, while also handling leave administration across the division. Thomas assists the HR director with managing complex HR issues, including employee investigations and providing consultation to management and employees.
Thomas served previously as talent acquisition coordinator with Spelman College, director of talent management with University of West Georgia, and HR manager with Georgia Southern University. Thomas holds a master’s in public administration and bachelor’s in political science. You can welcome Jamie to Campus Life at

Friday, Feb. 2: Campus Life's internal deadline for Nominations for Emory’s Award of Distinction
Consider nominating a Campus Life colleague for the university’s Award of Distinction, the highest award presented to university staff. The Campus Life team consistently demonstrates excellence in serving Emory students and the university community – and many staff members would make strong candidates for the prestigious Award of Distinction. The honor is bestowed annually on 10 to 15 university employees who have made outstanding contributions to the Emory community. Honorees are recognized at a special dinner and receive a $1,000 gift.

clde@emory.edu) in Campus Life HR by Friday, Feb. 2

Note this date is earlier than the university Human Relations deadline. Campus Life’s internal review team will review all nominations and decide which will be sent to university HR and the Awards Selection Committee.

The 2024 Emory King Week was celebrated Jan. 13-24 with a plethora of programs and events for the entire Emory community. One beloved annual event is Emory’s Day On, which honors King’s work, legacy and values through a variety of community service projects.

Emory recognized with multiple sustainability awards in 2023
The university received multiple awards across a variety of categories from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, including recognition for the Working Farms Fund's collaboration with The Conservation Fund.
