Claire DePalma joins Campus Life
On May 15, Claire DePalma will join the Campus Life team as special advisor to the associate vice president for health, well-being, access, and prevention, James Raper. In her new role, Claire will assist with the continued development, leadership and oversight of new programmatic and strategic efforts to support student well-being. She will join the Health and Well-being Leadership Team, collaborating with those colleagues and a range of students and other campus partners to continue to implement effective well-being interventions. Claire currently serves as assistant director of student affairs and wellness in Laney Graduate School. She brings nine years of experience in student affairs, including as a career planning advisor at Kennesaw State University and as assistant director of wellness, peer advising, and diversity and inclusion at Stanford University. DePalma is a board-certified coach, holds two master’s degrees in counseling and creative writing, respectively, and will receive her EdD in student affairs leadership next week.

Staff Fest is a long-time tradition that honors Emory University’s valued staff with food, fun and camaraderie on the Friday after Commencement. LMS Phase One launched
HR's Learning and Organizational Development has launched phase one of the new Learning Management System (LMS). Emory staff and faculty now have access to hundreds of new professional development courses, including: communication; diversity, equity and inclusion; leadership; Microsoft Excel and other platforms; wellness; and many more. Courses are available at
no cost and can assist you with your career and professional development activities. These courses offer professional development opportunities, but they do not replace required trainings currently in ELMS.

Women’s tennis selected to 2023 NCAA Championships
The opening rounds of the tournament will begin on Friday, May 5. On Saturday, Emory is scheduled to face the winner of the Washington and Lee vs. NC Wesleyan competition. The winner of the seven-team pod will advance to the finals of the national championships, May 14-17, in Orlando, Florida.
This selection marks the Eagles' 38th consecutive tournament appearance and their battle for the program's ninth national title.

Men's tennis earns at-large bid to NCAA Tournament
The No. 7 ranked Emory University men's tennis team is once again headed to the NCAA postseason. The men received a first-round bye and will play in the second round match on Saturday, May 6. This is Emory's 33rd consecutive trip to the NCAA postseason with the Eagles in search of their seventh national championship in program history.

Women's golf to complete in NCAA Championships
The No. 1 ranked Emory University women's golf team is headed to the NCAA Championships for the third consecutive season.
The Eagles, one of 29 teams selected for this year's championships,
is looking to defend its national championship following a record-setting tournament last spring. The 2023 championships will be conducted May 9-12 at Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida.

Honored by Time magazine for “tirelessly working to protect Jewish communities and to build a world where all are safe and protected,” Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt — U.S. special envoy to monitor and combat antisemitism — has been an Emory professor for three decades.

The hard question of affirmative action and slavery
If there were an affirmative action program for the descendants of enslaved people, would you consider that to be race-based?
“So today, a benefit to descendants of slaves would not be race-based, correct?” Kavanaugh said to Cameron Norris, a lawyer arguing for the end of race-based affirmative action. Norris seemed caught off guard. “I — I think that’s incorrect, Justice Kavanaugh,” he said.

Healthy Plate Challenge starts May 1
Operation Eat Right
launched on May 1 with the Healthy Plate Challenge. As a reminder, the Healthy Plate Challenge focuses on the importance of eating healthy meals each day and aiming to consume 3-5 servings of fruits and veggies for at least 21 days between
May 1 and 31.
