Senior compliance specialist joins Finance Service Center
As part of its ongoing work to advance staff flourishing, Campus Life’s Finance Services Center announced a new team member. Julian Hinds joins the team as senior compliance specialist. Most recently, he served as compliance manager in Emory’s Office of Research Integrity and Compliance (ORIC) and earlier as compliance specialist in Emory’s Office of Compliance. In his new role, Julian will work with Campus Life’s chief business officer to provide guidance, training, and expertise, supporting key compliance, regulatory, and risk activities of Campus Life departments. His work will facilitate the continued delivery of exceptional services for students. Julian holds a bachelor’s in education from Vanderbilt University and a juris doctor degree from Mercer University.
Housing Operations hires facility coordinators
The two new coordinators started on Sept. 1 and will be working with the two assistant directors to meet the facility needs of students on the Atlanta and Clairmont campuses.
LaShay Brown
is now the facilities coordinator assigned to the Clairmont Campus. She served previously as a custodial supervisor with Campus Services on the Atlanta campus.
Eric Hines
is now the facilities coordinator assigned to the Atlanta Campus. He served most recently with Housing Operations as the senior customer service representative on the Atlanta campus.

Malcolm Robinson accepts corporate DEI position
The associate director of the Office for Racial and Cultural Engagement (RACE), Malcolm Robinson, has accepted a position in diversity, equity, and inclusion with KPMG. Malcolm was hired as a program intern in 2015 and, after graduation from Emory, joined the team full time as program coordinator in 2018. When the director of the office and later the associate director left, Malcolm stepped up to take on a number of director-level responsibilities. In the years since, he has made countless contributions to Campus Life and the larger university community, most notably, Emory students. Today, in addition to managing the day-to-day operations of the Office for RACE, Malcolm supervises the office's program coordinators and runs the Black Men's Initiative, among other responsibilities. He is currently pursuing a PhD in educational leadership. Malcolm’s last day with Emory is Friday, Sept. 16. Dona Yarbrough will lead the Office for RACE during this transition.
Natalie Turrin heads north
The associate director of the Center for Women at Emory (CWE), Natalie Turrin, left Emory on August 15, 2022, relocating to Maine. After joining Campus Life in 2015 as a graduate fellow with CWE, Natalie served in several roles of increasing responsibility before advancing to associate director. In that position, Natalie led CWE graduate student initiatives, including the graduate women’s writing groups and retreats, as well as the First-Gen Grad Women’s Collective. She also revitalized the Women of Excellence Awards, securing key university partnerships and doubling program attendance. In addition, Natalie spearheaded the Praxis Student Leadership Board, guiding students’ digital projects and spearheading the annual conference. She successfully transformed Praxis into a Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) course that enrolled its first students this fall.

Oxford College celebrates Mid-autumn Festival
The Oxford College Chinese classes, Oxford Chinese Student Association and Korean American Student Association hosted the Mid-autumn Festival at Oxford College last weekend.
The Mid-autumn Festival began as a harvest festival during the Tang Dynasty (618-907). It is still celebrated across Asia on the 15th day of the eighth month of the Lunar calendar, which fell on Sept. 10.

Why do students haze in fraternities? A new study challenges conventional wisdom
For years, colleges have tried to curb hazing in fraternities and sororities. They’ve operated on the assumption that the reason these organizations haze is to build group solidarity. That understanding has informed research, college position statements, and coverage in this very publication. But new research published in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior suggests that the connection between hazing and group solidarity might actually be fairly minimal.
